Taurian World School brings NASA experience to campus

Becomes first school in India to expose students to reduced gravity aircraft education

Feb 14, 2013: Taurian World School (TWS), the best boarding school in Jharkhand and among India’s top 30 boarding schools, hosted Mr Jim Christensen, educator facilitator for NASA NEW workshops at Johnson Space Centre (JSC) and Chief Instructor of globally renowned Space Trek Programme, at its Ranchi campus today. Mr Christensen is currently on his maiden visit to India and made TWS his first port of call among the country’s educational institutions. Besides TWS, Mr Christensen will visit two more schools in Mumbai.

For students of Taurian World School, especially those who aspire to study aerospace, it was a lifetime experience to share the platform with the space education guru, who has mentored millions across the globe as a science and technology teacher and also as an educational specialist at Johnson Space Centre, US. Mr Christensen made presentations before the students relating to NASA, spaceflight and microgravity and educated them about his experiences flying aboard NASA’s reduced gravity aircraft. He also shared with TWS students his experience of working with students abroad on multiple experiment that have flown on the reduced gravity aircraft, the shuttle, the Space X Dragon and the International space Station.

Commenting on the occasion, the Chairman of Taurian World School, Mr Amith Bajla, said “At TWS we continuously explore different formats on sharpening the quality of delivery of education in sync with the interests of our students. I feel very happy that today we could host a space scientist of Mr Jim Christensen stature and bring him in the midst of our students to tutor them on aerospace through an interactive session. For us, it was an honour to have Mr Christensen in our school, the first for any educational institution in India. The event has gone a long way in satiating the desires of our students to delve into the world of space and gravity and de-mystifying them”.

The US Presidential Award winner, Mr Christensen, has to his credit of developing three experiments to fly aboard with reduced gravity aircraft – a free-flying robot programmed by students to accomplish maneuvers in microgravity, a demonstration of the effect of the microgravity on convection and a demonstration of magnetic fields in microgravity.
